A group of frogs is called an army

Vet Advice
Dr Katrina looks at how to help chubby pets. It’s not only humans who are battling the bulge these days. An alarming 41% of dogs and 33% of cats are overweight. It’s really all about the ribs. If you can see the ribs when you look at your pet, then it’s too thin.
If you can’t feel each rib when you run your fingers along their chest then it’s too fat. It should feel like a sheet of corrugated iron.
Fat pets not only look unhealthy, they could be heading for a range of serious diseases. If your dog or cat is overweight the important message is to tackle the problem slowly.
A starvation diet is not the answer. In fact in cats it can lead to liver disease. The best advice is to speak with your vet about the best way to tackle weight loss to make it successful for you and your pet.

A group of ravens is called an unkindness

Vet Advice
Dr Katrina looks at garden dangers.
Gardens are great for pets to run around and have fun in.
But they can also be danger zones.

Snail bait is one of the most common causes of accidental poisoning in dogs. The additives used to attract snails, are just as appealing to canines. As little as one teaspoon can be fatal. Snail bait also comes in liquid form, but dogs can still get this on their paws.

Inquisitive puppies might also find bulbs are fun to play with and chew. But they can be toxic and should be off limits.

And here’s one you may not know. Lilies and cats can be a deadly combination. Chewing leaves or petals, or licking pollen can be fatal. So don’t grow lilies, or buy them as cut flowers if you have a cat.

Did You Know
Camels are very clever: at night their body temperature is 105 degrees. During the heat of the day it drops to 93 degrees.

Vet Advice
If you own a cat or dog, fleas are a year round problem. Adult fleas live off blood. They cause dermatitis, transmit tapeworm, and in puppies’ heavy infestation can cause anaemia.

The fleas on your pet represent only 5% of the problem. The other 95% exist in the environment as eggs and larvae just waiting to hatch & jump onto the nearest animal.

Although fleas might be more prevalent in summer you have to maintain flea patrol all year. Warm houses over winter provide the perfect environment for hatching, so vacuum regularly and wash pet bedding in boiling water.

And it’s important to keep using your regular flea treatments. All this as well as a monthly spot on flea preventative on all your pets will help keep those pesky parasites at bay.

Did You Know
All cats are born with blue eyes

Vet Advice - Scratching
Dr Katrina looks at why cats scratch. Scratching is perfectly normal behaviour, but as cat owners know, it can leave tell tale and costly reminders on furniture and carpet.

Cats scratch for a couple of reasons. They do it to help shed old claw sheaths and expose the new sharper claw underneath. They also scratch to mark their territory by releasing a scent from the pads of their paws on objects as they scratch. Humans can’t detect these scent signatures,

The rough texture of upholstery and carpet is appealing because it mimics the texture of tree bark.

Kneading is another typical feline behaviour. It goes back to their time as a kitten when they had to knead their mother to stimulate milk.

If your cat is kneading your lap then it is a sure sign it is happy and content

They escaped on early lifeboats carrying so few people that no one objected.

Miss Margaret Hays of New York brought her Pomeranian with her in lifeboat No. 7, while Henry Sleeper Harper of the publishing family boarded boat No. 3 with his Pekinese, Sun Yat Sen.

Vet Advice - Pet Insurance
It‘s always an anxious time when our little mates get sick. It can be even more stressful when the cost of treatment escalates.

Specialist services like chemotherapy, advanced orthopaedics and opthalmology can cost thousands of dollars, sometimes tens of thousands.

It’s worth thinking about pet insurance and saving up to 80% of medical costs. Shop around for the best deal, and make sure you ask if the policy covers accident only, or accident and illness.

Also, is the pet is covered for life? Do some breeds, or older pets attract higher premiums? Pet insurance might be one more added expense. But it is worth considering as it could end up saving you a small fortune.

Barbeques are a great way to spend time with family and friends. But there are a couple of things you have to be careful of around these hungry guys.

Raw bones are fine for dogs, but cooked bones should be off limits, especially chicken and bones. They can splinter and cause all sorts of horrible internal problems.

Did You Know
A group of herons is called siege

Vet Advice - Medication
It‘s always distressing when our pets get sick.

Vets are often asked is it ok to give them something from the family medicine cabinet. The answer is always No.

When pets are sick you cannot give them human medication.

Panadol and other pain killers work well for us, but they can be lethal for pets. Even small doses, or child strength are too strong for animals. Cats simply can’t metabolise human pain killers.

Also be extremely careful about dropped tablets. Make sure you pick them up, and account for every missing tablet if there’s a spill.

If you’re in any doubt take your pet straight to your local vet.

Vet Advice - Parasites
It’s hard to believe puppies and kittens could harbour parasites and other nasties. But you need to think about parasite protection as soon as you get your puppy or kitten. They can be born with worms and often there are no symptoms, but if left untreated they can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea and weight loss.

Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes and can be fatal in your pet.

Of course fleas are a year round pest whatever the age of your dog or cat.

Parasite protection is essential to keep your cat or dog healthy and happy. So see your vet about the best treatment.

Vet Advice - Snacks
Dr Katrina looks at pets and snacks.

From day one it’s important to give your dog healthy & nutritious food, and that includes snacks.

Here are some things you should never feed your dog. Chocolate isn’t a treat. It’s actually toxic for dogs and could ultimately lead to heart failure.

Nuts can also be toxic for dogs. Make sure they’re always kept out of reach. Macadamia nuts are particularly harmful and can cause vomiting, weakness and muscle pain.

Also keep grapes well away from your pooch. If he or she eats them it could lead to kidney failure.

Dogs don’t have to miss out on treats. You can buy lots of different shapes and flavours. But remember to deal them out sparingly. And keep supplies out of reach of curious pets.

Vet Advice - Teething
Puppies and kittens look super soft & cuddly. But watch out for those teeth, they can be razor sharp. Puppies have milk or baby teeth, just like humans. They fall out and are replaced by larger adult teeth at around 6 months.

Pups want to chew everything, it’s all part of their development. But it’s important to help them learn fingers are out of bounds.

Help to break the habit early by offering chew toys instead.

Never smack if you catch them chewing on something they shouldn’t. Instead say a firm no and distract them with a toy.

Put valuables out of reach, or use a baby gate to keep pets away from restricted areas.

Watch out for plaque in dogs and cats. If you introduce dry foods into their diet when they’re young it will help prevent a plaque build up.

Common causes include dehydration, undigested bones, hair, anal sac disease & prostate enlargement. Constipation may be reduced by adding psyllium husks to wet food.

Don’t use human laxatives as these may do more damage than good. If your pet is straining to defecate, it is best to visit your vet who will give an enema if necessary.

Keep in mind that constipation can indicate am underlying problem and if left untreated can be life threatening.
